Our dedication to sleep medicine and advancing care for people living with complex and rare conditions, like narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), has been enhanced by our strong partnerships with patient communities. As a rare disease company with most of our therapeutic areas addressing populations of less than 200,000 patients, we understand these conditions often involve populations even smaller than that, creating a unique dynamic. While awareness of these rare conditions has grown, the journey for patients and caregivers continues to present challenges spanning diagnosis, symptom management and recognizing comorbidities. In fact, many rare disease diagnoses are delayed for years, primarily because most physicians may only see one or two such patients annually, if any.
We believe true progress and meaningful impact stem from collaboration. Partnerships with advocacy groups are essential — they enable us to gain firsthand insights into the daily realities of living with a sleep condition. Advocacy groups also serve as powerful conduits, bringing the authentic patient voice to the forefront, guiding our efforts and ensuring our initiatives truly resonate.
Working side-by-side with advocacy organizations, we’re dedicated to improving comprehensive care and raising awareness about the important link between sleep health and cardiovascular well-being. For example, the American Heart Association recently launched a collaborative initiative with the Sleep Matters Initiative at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston to examine and address the combined effects of these health risks, with support from Jazz. Recognizing emerging evidence which suggests poor-quality sleep, high sodium intake, and hypertension are more interconnected than previously understood, this initiative aims to raise awareness among clinicians around the interplay between sleep, sodium intake and hypertension and improve cross-disciplinary care.
Yet, our partnerships are more than just collaborations; they’re an extension of our shared vision to help people living with these sleep conditions through increased knowledge and improved access to resources that, ultimately, enable more comprehensive approaches to care. Given the small patient population, we maintain a strong focus on patient findings through our relationships with advocacy groups and leverage unique insights from patient registries. What’s unique about Jazz Pharmaceuticals is how we approach this, how we think differently and index on what’s most important and what will have the greatest impact on patient lives.
By working together with these advocacy groups, we remain steadfast in our dedication to developing life-changing medicines for people with rare diseases—often with limited or no therapeutic options. And this dedication extends to helping ensure that once they’re diagnosed, they get the treatments they need, delivering on our mission to transform the lives of patients.
March is Sleep Awareness Month, and we’re thankful for our partnerships with the sleep community as we look to amplify awareness of the overlooked aspects of life with narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia to help advance care for people living with these conditions.
